Truro Church
Mission Date: August 15-25, 2005
Philippians 4:19 I saw God's hand all over every aspect of this trip. It's hard to even know where to begin. God provided for our every need. From start to finish, He was in the details. He gave our young people the communication skills they needed to participate and help lead a retreat with the Honduran youth of Iglesia de la Presentación. This is not to say that the Holy Spirit fell on us in such a way that we were automatically fluent in Spanish. But it is to say that God was working among two groups of youth, many of whom did not speak the other's language, to build relationships and understanding. The retreat included a small group component where our youth and the youth of Iglesia shared with each other about cultural practices: how a birthday is celebrated, what families are like, what is done for Christmas. Even when language was a barrier, through drawing pictures and other means, the youth on the retreat discovered ways they could communicate with each other. There was provision for our health needs while we were in Honduras and when our original flight home was cancelled due to the weather caused by Hurricane Katrina. Within an hour of learning that disappointing news, we were on a bus heading toward a very nice Bed and Breakfast in Tegucigalpa, run by a couple that graduated from Taylor University in Indiana. Scott, the owner, is bilingual and made sure we had everything we needed, from meals to rooms to sanity and peace of mind. Even the night we found ourselves stuck in Houston on the return trip home (weather-related again), there was again God's provision for us. The airline would not pay for our breakfast, but on the way from the airport to our hotel, again feeling down that we couldn't return home for another night, we met a Christian man on our shuttle bus whose own children had gone on mission trips that summer. When we checked in to the hotel, before I could say anything, he had paid the front desk for breakfast buffets for our entire group! You have probably heard that Katrina kept us in Tegucigalpa, Honduras for three extra days at the end of our trip and that the same weather caused us to narrowly miss our connecting flight in Houston. We spent a fourth night in Texas before we could finally come home. You have likely heard about team sickness and disagreeable bacteria and the copious amounts of Imodium and Pepto-Bismol we used (hopefully not in too graphic detail). While these two aspects of the trip stand out to me, what overshadows both of them is the way in which God provided for all our needs. Every turn of the trip was this way. My faith in God grew mightily as a result. We trusted God through some challenging situations, and God was faithful all the way through, as he promises to be when we follow him. The retreat and the time spent with the youth of Honduras exceeded my expectations. I am thrilled that our young people have started forming relationships with this small but fast-growing mission church, and am excited to see how God continues the work and ministry of this trip into the future! We owe many thanks to Rene Crow, our site coordinator and long-term missionary through South American Missionary Society. Reverend Dagoberto, the priest of La Presentación, and the lay leaders of his church who were very gracious and hospitable toward us. Thanks and praise be to God for his provision and support throughout the trip |
